What Is Parapsychology?

'Parapsychology' encompasses what is not rather than what is. It is defined as any study related to psychic, paranormal, parapsychological or psychic science. Since there is no referral for its genesis, most explanations seem imaginary and unreal. The earliest use of this terminology dates back to 1889 by a psychologist named Max Dessoir.

Such phenomena can be categorized as:

• Telepathy: Ability to communicate with the power of mind.
• Telekinesis: Ability to move things using the power of mind
• Clairvoyance: Ability to know about future events in advance.

All such phenomena are not proven by scientific laws and defined using negative terminologies.Parapsychology is based on non-materialistic values which is also the very basis of spirituality. It is understood that attempts to prove spirituality using scientific tools and models led to the very genesis of parapsychology. Talking to the dead, making predictions or making objects move were phenomena which attracted study and research which got the name 'paranormal phenomena'.

Both scientists and spiritualists look at the same coin but from different faces. While the former believe that Para- normal phenomena occur due to some unknown mechanism not related to any models logically proving how it all works. The later insist that paranormal phenomena proved the theory of immortality and after-life.

Parapsychological phenomena are an ever shrinking field. Any act or idea remains in this category only till some logical or scientific means does not explain it. Once proven, such phenomena automatically become absorbed as a part of any stream of science. Since there is no scientific model for this study, it has not gained too much of popularity.
