Often, in business networking, we hear the advice, "Keep in touch". It is very important to do so but there is a bit of confusion and some questions that come up when this is discussed. That is completely understandable.
"Keep in touch" can mean so many different things and can be interpreted in so many different ways. One person might think that it means to pop by someone's office every week. Another person might think it means to send a greeting once every two years.
It is a very subjective topic. In addition, there is no right or wrong way to keep in touch. It all depends on the person and the relationship. To help add clarity to the overall concept, here are 5 suggestions on the topic of keeping in touch;
1. Contacting each other and having conversation every now and then.
Once you meet a new contact and it is obvious that you won't be doing any immediate business together, simply having conversations every now and then can help you stay connected. Of course, it shouldn't happen if there is no chemistry between you and it seems as though you are forcing this to happen. This should be a pleasant and enjoyable exchange of goodwill.
2. Sending each other or referrals.
Power Partners don't always communicate with each other everyday. As a matter of fact, the exchange of business referrals may be the only communication involved. This is not necessarily a bad thing as exchanges of business are refreshing and wanted.
3. Exchanging useful industry information.
Another way to keep in touch is by a subtle form of information marketing. While two contacts may not be very close or involved, the exchange of useful information to each other, keeps them connected. This is officially keeping in touch.
4. Let's do lunch.
Business and lunch is usually a benevolent combination. It's also a great way for two or more colleagues to strengthen and maintain their ties. Lunches can include; business discussions, current events, or better yet, meeting each other at a networking luncheon. If the latter is done, you can introduce each other to new contacts as trusted sources.
5. Happy birthday or congratulations on your new; business, promotion, position, etc..
Okay, you may not always know the birthdays of your business contacts but through the above methods, you can gather this information through time. Also, if you are doing your due diligence and keeping in touch, you will have the opportunity to offer your congratulations on any occasion that calls for it
