You should decide from the outset what you want people to do when they visit your website. You need to lead visitors in a desired direction - this is known as a 'call to action'. Basically, you want to visitors direct visitors to specific areas and to deter them from leaving. So, you need to make sure that you have a clear 'call to action' in a prominent position on each page.
Access a free report, audio or course
Make sure that you have an opt-in box on every page of your website promoting your free content. This opt-in box will ask for name and email address, which will link to your shopping cart/list management service.
Buy a product
You want to make it as easy as possible for visitors to buy from you. Therefore, you should make sure that you include all the necessary information about the product, so the buyer does not have to contact you with questions. With this in mind, you could include a FAQ section that provides comprehensive answers. You also want to make sure that people can pay via PayPal or using credit/debit cards, so a 'Buy Now' button is essential.
Sign up for an event
Whether you are running a 'teleseminar', a 'telesummit' or a live event, you need to have an opt-in box where people can enter their names and email addresses. You also need to set up a specific autoresponder list for these people, so that you can provide them with all the necessary information (call-in details, location, etc).
Become a member
If you run a membership site, you might want to offer a free or a trial version of your site. Make sure you have an opt-in box for these people asking them to provide all the details you need to set them up.
Request a call-back/contact
You might want to offer the facility for people to request that you contact them via email or phone. Make sure that you have a bold graphic button asking for their contact details and reason for contacting them. Not leave!
Remember that visitors can leave your site at any time with a single click. Obviously, you do not want to happen, so make sure that you have clear calls to action that encourage visitors to stay as long as possible.
