Expert Author Heather Ireland

Constipation is a common thing that everyone gets to go through once in a while. However most of the time, it is not given much thought or attention - until the time that it comes. You then, just can't help but wonder, what causes constipation?

The Causes

Actually the there are many causes of constipation. Usually, the main cause is simply the hardening of the bowels (or feces). The main reasons as to why this happens are usually because:

  • you don't take in enough fluids
  • you don't take in enough fiber
  • you may be taking some medication that might be affecting your body's fluid levels and minerals.

These are the physical causes of constipation. There is also the psychological aspect of constipation known as psychosomatic constipation. Some individuals experience this when they feel uncomfortable, anxious, or unfamiliar with their surroundings. This explains why some people cannot move their bowels when they are new to a place, like a dormitory or new house.

The Treatments

For those who experience constipation due to its physical causes, simply do the opposite of why it occurred in the first place. If you're not drinking enough fluids, drink more water - or some fruit juice; although, in this case, water might actually be the best option. If you're not taking in enough fiber, chomp on foods with high fiber content. These would include vegetables, fruits, whole meal bread, and beans. If you're on medication which may be have diuretic effects, thus affecting your body's fluid levels, simply take in more fluids. It will help.

It is important to note that these natural ways of dealing with constipation are the most encouraged ones. Taking laxatives or other artificial substances to aid your constipation may work - but it may not be a healthy option. If you continually do this, your body might end up being dependent on these substances, and in turn, you cannot move your bowels without them. With such, your problem with constipation just went one level up.

However, if the cause of your constipation is other than what has been stated, the treatment for you might be best consulted with a physician.
