All exercise machines are not created equal. Depending on the muscles they target and engage, the range of
motion, and even design and layout of the workout machine you are on determines just how many calories you are able to burn each session. The higher impact of a treadmill will allow you to torch more fat for the same amount of effort when compared to an elliptical, and a stationary bike that is upright will win out when compared to a recumbent that allows the peddler to sit back. How can you pick the best machine for you to get the most out of your workout, whittle your middle, and improve endurance? Well, take a look at how your go-to machine ranks:
Treadmill; you burn roughly 100 calories for every mile run
Elliptical; don't let yourself rest on the armrest, as that will reduce calories burned and if it comes with
arm components use them to burn more
Stair Machine; like running and the elliptical these get your heart rate up quickly, just don't hang on the arm
rests for support
Rowing Machine; often overlooked, but because they engage every muscle in your body, they offer a great workout
Stationary bike; choose an upright one, but it still takes about 4 miles on the bike to burn 100 calories
Of course, it does come down to how much effort you put into any given machine. The harder you work, the more you burn, but by keeping in mind that the more muscle groups you incorporate into the exercise, the more your body will have to exert itself and thus the more calories you will use. Be sure to find what you're target heart rate should be in order to reap the most benefits from your cardio routine. Also be sure to pick something you like and enjoy and that you will continue to do. It's no use knowing that running will burn more calories than biking, if you hate it and would never do it!
