It's really simple; you want to know what your expectations are for each other. You also need to know if you come close to your partner's notion of an ideal mate. Ask that person what his or her type is and how you fit into his or her definition of desirable.

Asking about long-term goals is also essential before establishing a strong emotional connection with somebody. And by long-term goals I mean both personal and professional. If you see that your partner is just saying he wants to achieve some things but never takes the steps to carry them out then the same might be true in your relationship. You don't want to be with somebody who doesn't plan ahead and takes life one day at a time.
