What Are the Features of Front Loading Washing Machines That You Should Consider?

Expert Author Vaughn Dean J Lee

We've all heard about the new front loading washing machines and we've seen advertisements for them but what's the big deal? Why are they so different than our beloved top loading machines?

Well, here are a few of the features that we've been able to come up with. Your job is to imagine how these features can be turned into benefits that will justify your purchasing a front loader (if you're even interested, that is).

A) There are ever more stringent laws being written every year that severely test the energy conservation of appliances. When these laws are passed, the appliance manufacturers must find ways to build their products within the scope of the guidelines set forth by the Department of Energy. If they don't abide by these guidelines, politics become involved and the manufacturer will get left behind if their machines don't stay within these strict rules. So it behooves them to continue to increase the energy efficiency of their new clothes washing machines. The newest front loading washers are much more efficient at staying within the strict DOE guidelines and, by being so, tend to save the consumer a lot of geetus (Gaelic for money?) over even short periods of time.

B) Because, with front loading washing machines, there is no longer a need to flood the compartment with water and soap, there is a significant decrease in the requirement for water use. The minimum amount of water needed to cause the detergent action and cleaning process to take place is the standard. There is no need to agitate the clothes inside a water filled space in order to get them clean. Instead, the clothes are gently lifted to the near top of the tumbler where they simply fall back to the bottom and start over again. This gentle tumbling action is said to actually clean clothes better than the constant agitation in a top loading machine. This tumbling process requires very little in the way of water so, in turn, your water bill is much lower.

C) If there is a need for hot or warmer water, it's volume too, is reduced significantly and the result is a savings in energy, water and detergent, not to mention your time. Many of the better models will actually help you determine the right temperature for your fabrics, thus, you can place the appropriate clothing in the right sorted pile for use in the right temperature.

D) Because of the reduced need for water and the higher spinning speeds of the new front loading washers, more water is spun out quicker. This leads to less time in the dryer. This then results in even more energy savings.

E) If one observes the amount of lint produced in the dryer after using a front loading washer, it will be evident that the tumbling action in the washer is much more gentle on the fabrics and, again, this saves money on new clothes. The small savings from all the different features results in big savings over a short period of time.

F) Finally, you will save some significant money by using far less detergent, bleach and softeners than you must use in the top loaders. Of course, the new machines also brought with them the new High Efficient (HE) detergents that produce much less suds. Funny but this less sudsing action actually costs more than regular detergents. There are some ways to use regular detergent and cause less suds. We'll discuss that in another article. The hope is that the cost of these new HE detergents will eventually come down to about the cost of regular detergents. The HE soaps are especially made for the front loading washing machines and, the manufacturers claim that it will keep the machines from breaking down.

These are the features. Can you see any benefits? We'll talk about them later.
