Most of us have heard of them, but the answer to the question what are subliminal messages and how do they work is known only to a select group of people that spent a lot of time researching this form of persuasion.
Subliminal messages can be delivered visually either through very fast flashes of words, images or short sentences or by hiding suggestive images inside other images. Another method is delivering subliminal messages conversationally through embedded commands or while a person is in an altered state of consciousness, but these aren't the subject of this article.
Here I will focus on subliminal messages embedded in video. This method has been very thoroughly tested and brought sometimes amazing results.
So, what are subliminal messages and how do they work?
Subliminal messages are communications that are received, perceived and acted upon unconsciously.
Most of the information that we receive from the environment must be filtered before it is presented to the consciousness. Just imagine having to think of everything all the time and having to be consciously aware of everything in your surroundings. There's a very big chance that you're not aware of your foot right now...
Now you probably are, but that's because your attention was shifted towards your foot after reading the previous sentence. The filtering mechanism serves only relevant information to the consciousness but keeps track of everything. Just because you're not aware of your foot it doesn't mean it doesn't react to the environment automatically.
A subliminal message is flashed on the screen so fast that it isn't considered worthy of conscious awareness. It is, however, perceived and acted upon unconsciously.
There are three kinds of messages that can be embedded in video:
- Single words
- Short sentences
- Pictures
Words with strong emotional value attached to them are perfect candidates for priming the mind to move toward certain desired directions which aren't always straightforward. Testing and research data are key in determining which words bring what results. Words such as "death", "grave" and "coffin" (the so called death primes) made exposed students more racist and patriotic, for example.
Short sentences
Short sentences that evoke certain emotions can also be used. Perhaps the most known such sentence is "My mommy and I are one". After subliminal exposure to this sentence, people experienced a huge drop in anxiety. This didn't have the same effect on people that were abused as children, though.
Subliminal pictures
Certain pictures of facial expressions, sharks, Disney cartoon characters and others have produced very predictable reactions in exposed subjects.
Hopefully now, after reading this article, you're better acquainted with what are subliminal messages and how do they work.
