I think that for any video to be a great success, certain considerations need to be applied to that video, and I wish to outline some of those in this article. I am reasonably sure you are aware that for a video to work, in terms of transmitting a message well, the video needs to hold the attention of the viewer. Hence, you will need to ensure the following points are considered in the making of your video:
- The script or story line needs to be interesting
- The content needs to be well delivered.
- Attention to technical details need to be considered, like lighting, sound, and titles
- It all needs to be well mixed together, to have a pleasing and attention holding effect.
Your next logical question will most likely be how to put all the above together. In my experience, the best approach is to story board, or script the video, so it is properly planned, and executed, rather than just worked out on the spot. Remember, that even though you know the story you wish to tell, your viewer is watching it for the first time, and will need explicit detail, rather than assumption, to get the correct flow of the story.
Whilst this is not a complex issue, it is important to get this right, to help you, and more importantly, your viewer along.
One other method to explain the contents of your video (particularly advertorial, or educational 'how to" video, is to use good overlay, or text fonts, in an easy to follow form. This may be tabular, or bullet point form, depending on your preference, and other 'action' on the screen. Putting this another way, you do not want to put too much information in each shot, or you may overwhelm your viewer. It has been proven that even intelligent people can only take in so much from a video screen at any time. Hence, if there was text overlay, talking, and action demonstrations, in a rapid 'action' video, your viewer may miss some important point, while concentrating on some other aspect of the video. This is in line with some people being visual, while others may prefer to hear, and still others, read.
I am reasonably certain you will understand that it is important to pace your information delivery, and keep it fun, and interesting. After all, your viewer falling asleep is not normally, the desired response to your hard work and effort.
I will be expanding on some of these principles in more detail in further articles in this series.
