One of the most popular products in stores today is one of the most simple: bottled water. However, is the stuff inside the bottle really safe? Where does it come from? Is it worth the money? What are people drinking bottled water really drinking?
The first thing that many people do not know about what is inside the bottle is, well, what is really in the bottles! Although the label may read that inside is just pure liquid, maybe "enhanced with minerals", no other information is given. What non-added minerals are inside? Are there any pesticide or fertilizer residues? Was the product treated to remove bacteria and other illness-causing contaminants? It does not say.
Where does the stuff in the bottles come from, anyway? The package may show a snow-capped mountain with pretty little deer, but that is not where things are really coming from. If you check the back of the package it usually will tell you where things are coming from in tiny letters. "From New Jersey", "From New York", and similar notes are always there is you look carefully enough.
Making things even funnier, some bottles actually say they have come from "municipal supplies" or "municipal source". The municipal source is treated just like it would be for the city before being packaged and shipped out. This means you are paying for someone else's city water, packed in bottles and shipped over to you. Why do that when you could get something similar out of your own tap?
Reading the package also always says the product is "treated with reverse osmosis", which is the fancy way to say it is just plain filtered. Sometimes it is "enhanced with minerals" as well with things that you probably have at home such as sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) on the list.
Last but not least there is the bottle itself. Bottles are typically plastic. Plastic is just oil treated with assorted chemicals, heat and pressure. The problem with this treatment process is that sometimes the chemicals used can and will leech out into whatever is inside the package. Recalls and law changes happen all the time because of the unsafe nature of plastic.
So, what is in that bottle? Do not put things to chance! The only way to know what you really are drinking is to filter and bottle it yourself for much less than what the other people drinking bottled water are paying. Your health and your wallet will thank you.
