When someone gets a bad case of acne they should be seeing a doctor for treatment to prevent the possibility of scarring. You would want to heal the acne as soon as possible.
Your doctor can prescribe some powerful medications to really target the acne.
Depending on the severity of your acne will the doctor decide what must be used. They would have a choice of topical medicine which would be like a lotion or oral taken internally. An oral medication would most likely be used for sever acne.
As a treatment for cystic acne you may be prescribed isotretinoin. It is a powerful oral medication that has been shown to target acne that has been resistant to other medicines. What is good about isotretinoin is its ability to target all the factors that could be causing acne. It is taken in pill form and may be prescribed to use for 16 to 20 weeks.
Isotretinoin is not safe to use by pregnant women or those who wish to become pregnant while using this medication. It is also not recommended for breastfeeding mothers. The possibility for birth defects in a fetus and babies are real using isotretinoin.
For severely inflamed acne cysts the doctor has the choice of injecting it with a diluted corticosteroid. This will reduce inflammation and give it a chance to heal. Its purpose is to kind of melt the cyst away over a weeks time.
Oral antibiotics may be prescribed for acne, if the bacteria in the acne becomes resistant to what you are using the doctor will switch to something else. Oral contraceptives would be another possibility for females to help with acne that may be linked to hormones.
