You hear about it all the time and you realize that it's an epidemic that's only going to get bigger if something isn't done right away. This epidemic is obesity and thanks to the bad diet and sedentary lifestyles people across the world tend to live, the epidemic is spilling over into the livelihood of children. In fact, more kids every day are being diagnosed overweight or obese. There was a time that only one or two kids in a classroom were obese but that number has grown considerably to more than half a class.
It's not near as likely that your overweight/obese child will be ridiculed, taunted or teased about their weight like they may have been 20 years ago. However, that doesn't mean it's any less scary than it was those many years ago. Obesity can lead to many healthy complications and diseases. If you have a child who's considered obese, you may have to deal with several medical conditions in the near future. These health conditions include:
- Type 2 diabetes
- High blood pressure
- Boosted risks for cardiovascular disease
- Back and joint problems
- Myocardial infractions
- Atherosclerosis
- Possibility of cancer development including prostate and breast cancers
- Decreased quality of life
It's vitally important that you assist your child in gaining control of their weight before the noted health conditions become a permanent part of their every day life. Start by educating yourself and your child about the physical and emotional characteristics of obesity. From your research, come up with some creative measures that will help your child lose some weight; after all, some weight can be grown into over time. However, if it seems you're getting nowhere with your child, you may need to check out several weight loss camps for kids. Weight loss camps are far different from the "fat camps" of the yester-years.
Remember that you can reverse obesity so long as you work hard. You can help your child with his/her condition by empowering them and helping them to make good, healthy lifestyle choices. Bear in mind that this process isn't going to be solved overnight. You will need to make a commitment for your child, his/her future, for you and for your entire family.
