Ways to Manage Your Child's Tantrums

The aim of this article is to teach parents the best ways to manage their child's tantrums. Since prevention is the best way to nip tantrums in the bud, here are several tips to help parents before your child's next meltdown.

Look for Environmental Triggers

Environmental triggers are the things that seem to typically set your child off. Sometimes these triggers can be certain times of the day, or certain people that make the child feel uneasy. Finally, it can be something as simple as your child is hungry, thirsty, or just plain tired. The best way to avoid these triggers is to teach your child how to manage them, or at least be aware of there existence.

Educate Your Child The Language of Emotion

The more emotional words you can add to in his/her vocabulary will help your child tantrum less. This works by replacing any hitting, kicking, biting, or throwing himself/herself on the floor with words instead. I have a saying "if the mouth does not say it, the body will". Give your child the words to help him/her express the boiling emotions that are rising, before they explode behaviorally.

Teach Your Child Ways to Express

Tantrums are simply emotions on overload. Teach your child ways to express his/her negative emotions through talking, drawing, or writing, instead of physically acting them out.

In conclusion, handling tantrums will require patience. If a parent is quick to explode his/herself, then the child will only follow what the parent does when the child becomes upset.

Do you want to learn exactly how to eliminate your child's out-of-control and defiant behavior without using Punishments, Time-Outs, Behavioral Plans, or Rewards?
