If you have never built or installed a pond of any type before then your best move would be to start off with a water garden kit. At least this way you are going to be sure to have all of the basic requirements as well as some instructions. Don't be concerned about not being able to be creative. There are a whole variety of pond kits available with some being more elaborate and complex than others. You can always add accessories and additions to your water garden kit after you've begun with a basic setup.
The major components of your kit will be the liner. This will most likely be a rubber liner as opposed to a preformed liner. The idea of the rubber liner is so it will conform to the size and shape of the hole you dig for your pond. This will allow you to customize your own natural shape based on the area you plan on installing your garden.
Along with your kit will come the "skimmer". Generally speaking, it does not matter where the pond is placed, wind and rain will carry debris and plant trimming into the garden. The skimmer is essential to remove floating debris so as not to plug up or damage the pump and filter. In addition to this there will be a water pump. This pump will circulate the water from the skimmer up into a waterfall. In the waterfall itself you will find lava rocks. These are to provide a surface for the bacteria growth.
Various pieces of pipes and plumbing parts should also be packaged in your kit. Some of these will have to be joined. If PVC glue is not in your package, you can find it at your local hardware store. Then amongst all of the components is the filtration system, the skimmer nets and the bulkhead fittings as well.
So as far as the basics are concerned, everything is there to get you started on your water garden. Chances are for the first time building one you may forget various components if you don't utilize one of the kits. It may serve you to know that in most cases buying the same components individually are more expensive then purchasing the complete starter kit.
Now you should not be in need of anything to get your pond into operation but you still need aesthetic items, such as your rockery, plants, and fish. You may even decide that you want a fountain as part of your pond as well.
Now's the fun part! You are finally ready to purchase your pond accessories. This can also become the expensive part if you don't keep yourself in control of your buying. There are so many wonderful accessories to choose from it can be quite difficult to restrain yourself. Try to buy a few plants and accessories and add to them each passing year. Although a water fountain may seem like a wonderful idea now, you can always plan to install it next year so you don't have to break the bank.
While water garden kits contain the essentials for creating your pond, be sure not to include items that you don't need. Remember, kits come in all shapes and sizes, so you must communicating clearly as to the size, dimensions, and budget to your potential vendor. Take your time, there is lots to choose from. And be sure to find out about return policies and warranties if any, to guarantee that the product will perform and last for years to come.
