We all know that using washable nappies/diapers is becoming more and more popular. And why not? They're better for the environment, they save money and they look super-cute. However not everyone has the drying facilities, or ability to shell out the upfront cost for cloth nappies
But have you ever considered washable baby wipes?
Washable baby wipes can be used with either cloth or disposable nappies / diapers. They can be made from any soft material, although cotton terry towelling and bamboo are most popular.
The wipes need to be soaked in a wetting solution and then can be used like a disposable wipe to clean your baby's face, hands or bottom. Because they're soaked in just water (or water and essential oil) they are chemical free and great for sensitive skin and eczema.
After use the wipes, should be soaked in an anti-bacterial solution prior to washing, this helps loosen stains meaning that you can wash them at lower temperatures.
But what about poo?
The big question everyone wants to ask. But if you think about it, the majority of the poo goes on the nappy or diaper in the first wipe and is then either flushed or binned. Only the smeary bits are left which are much less than you'd find if a poo has exploded out the side of the babygro.
And you'll find that actually cleaning your baby is much quicker and easier, because unlike most disposable wipes, cloth wipes actually wipe poo away, rather than smearing it around.
How much can you save?
Disposable wipes cost up to $4 and if you assume that you'll need one packet a week for two years (and this is a VERY conservative estimate) that will cost you $416, so you can literally save hundreds of dollars by switching to washable wipes.
Environmentally friendly
Washable wipes are also environmentally friendly. Unlike washable nappies you don't have to wash them separately, or dry them which not only saves money but time also - essential for any new mum. Obviously you're not contributing to landfill either, with either the wipes or packaging.
Great for sensitive skin
If you or your baby suffer from sensitive skin, eczema, dermatitis etc then you'll know that many disposable wipes (even ones formulated for sensitive skin) contain irritants, like parabens, SLS etc. Washable wipes can be used with just plain water, or essential oil blends such as lavender and chamomile which are soothing for baby's skin.
