Warning Signs of an At-Risk Youth

It's no groundbreaking news that the teen years can be one of the most difficult periods of one's life. The lives of millions of teens experience physical, mental, and emotional growth. But not every teenager handles this growth in the same way. And not every parent of a teenager knows exactly how to cope with and how he or she can best be there for their child during this difficult time, especially if that teen seems to be dealing with the problems they face in a negative way. Negative coping techniques include criminal behavior and/or drug abuse. Your teen may be at risk if he or she displays more than 4 of these warning signs. He or she

1. Was expelled or suspended from school; has dropping grades; or is in danger of dropping out of high school.
2. Has problems with the law.
3. Is verbally abusive.
4. Struggles with basic family rules and expectations, including household chores and homework.
5. Associates with a suspect peer group.
6. Seems depressed or withdrawn.
7. Has lost interest in former positive activities, sports, or childhood friends.
8. Has displayed evidence of attempted suicide.
9. Easily offended and flies into a rage or verbal attack at the smallest provocation from the parents.
10. Displays violent behavior.
11. Appears deceitful and manipulative.
12. Is sexually promiscuous.
13. Changes appearance or personal hygiene.
14. Has been caught stealing money or personal items from family members.
15. Lacks motivation.
16. Lies about his or her activities.
17. Displays outbursts of temper.
18. Seems to lack self-esteem and self-worth.
19. Defies established rules, unheeding of the consequences.
20. Has a problem with authority.
21. Suspected to be experimenting with drugs or alcohol.
22. Makes his or her parents feel powerless.

One of the most important things a parent can do for a suspected at-risk teen is to be there for him or her. Teens are more likely to act out negatively if they feel like their parents won't care or don't really want to hear what they have to say. Remember that being a teenager is hard for EVERY teen, so don't be quick to jump to conclusions. And finally, make sure to tell your teen that you love them no matter what.
