There you are again, sweating profusely after 60 minutes of monitoring your heart rate and ensuring that you maintain the suggested beats per minute for your optimum 'fat burning zone.' It's downright intolerable; at first that 60 minutes isn't too bad, but as you continue to run day after day, stride after stride, seeing minimal progress, that 1 hour begins to seem like an eternity. Eventually you give up, stop going to the gym and slip right back into your old habits.

Well I'm about to show you a whole new reality; a reality that isn't dictated by prolonged cardio, a reality where we look at fitness and a toned body in a more practical sense, and a reality where you will NEVER have to touch a treadmill again.
For a second, imagine that you are a caveman or cavewoman, thousands of years ago. You are in a time when there is no technology, there are no treadmills, and no fitness guides to be found; just you and your cave. Picture a moment when you just finished eating your kill from the last hunt. Now, stop and visualize yourself. You are lean and muscular; you probably have a six pack, you have the body of a true hunter.
Now ask yourself something: when you were hunting to gather food for yourself, chasing down wild boar, or saber tooth tigers with the rest of your tribe, did you run at a calm steady rate for exactly 60 minutes while making sure you maintained a certain heart rate? When packs of lions or tigers hunt wilde beasts, do they sprint after their prey or do they lightly jog? Whose body is more appealing, a feeble looking marathon runner, or a toned and strong sprinter?
Ok I think you get the picture, welcome to the world of interval training. Short bursts of high intensity cardio with rests in between each exercise. You can spend a third of the time working out with results that aren't even worth comparing. In addition to the time and results, your workouts will also be more exciting and satisfying. What EXACTLY does interval training entail? It can be anything really. It could be sprinting up hills or doing wind sprints on a track; basically anything that involves short burst of high intensity cardio with rest in between each burst for a period of around 15-20 minutes. The ratio of how long you rest in between each sprint and how long you actually sprint will be different for everyone; but a good place to start would be 30 seconds of sprinting and 4 minutes of rest.
If executed properly, supplementing high intensity cardio interval training into your workout plan instead of that monotonous treadmill, will sky rocket your results; especially when coupled with a balanced weight lifting plan. Give it a try, I guarantee you will be pleased with the results.
