Want Happiness? Stop Helping Others

Expert Author Awdhesh K Singh

Most people are not happy despite having so many achievements in their lives. They had tried their best to remain happy and did everything to become happy yet they failed. All they have discovered that happiness can never be achieved.

In order to be happy, you need to know what makes you unhappy. Most people can easily find that they are not unhappy due to themselves but they are unhappy because they see so much of unhappiness around. For example, you cannot be happy if your wife, children, parents are sick or unhappy. When you see so much of injustice around, you lose happiness since you fear that the same thing may happen to you. You are disturbed by the people who rob, commit crimes, theft and murders as you feel that same thing may happen to you also.

We try to help others so that they become happy and so we too become happy. So many great people committed this mistake. They give their entire wealth to poor, yet the poor quickly used that wealth and became poor again. You have given food to the hungry and then soon you find that they have either eaten so much of food that they have become fat and sick or they have sold foods to buy drugs and alcohol. You try to educate the illiterate but you find that they are not interested. Even your children do not follow what you say despite the fact that it is in their interest.

The fact is that when we acquire anything in our life or become "someone" in our lives, we start feeling like God. We feel that we can solve the problems of other people. When you see a poor man, you give him alms and charity so that his poverty is removed. You do not inquire why he is poor. Whether he is not working hard? Whether he is a drug addict? You just want to fix the problem by following the shortest route. Yet the person comes back to the same level since he exhausts everything given to him soon and he has not learned to earn.

In reality, most people suffer due to their own karma. If you visit any jail or hospital, you can discover in no time that most people are there due to their own misdeeds. Yet none of them are likely to admit that they have committed any mistake in their life or that they are responsible for their present. The laws of karma do not apply in this life alone as its consequences are to be born in the next lives as well. Therefore, a poor, weak or handicap person is most likely suffering the consequences of his own past karmas.

Yet most people, due to their limited vision and knowledge, cannot understand the reality. They try to play God by helping them to save from the consequences of their karmas. In reality, even God does not interfere in the Karma principles, otherwise there would have been no pain and suffering in this world. Therefore, most people after enjoying a brief instinct of borrowed happiness gets back to face the consequence of karma. They have to now suffer more since they have to now pay for the borrowed happiness as well. The result is that they are even more unhappy.

The right approach is not to help anyone but to help yourself. The most important person who can make you happy is yourself. If you do everything right and lead a virtuous life doing only good karma, you shall get happiness in your life.

You must help only those who seek your help in solving their problem. It is because the desire to reform comes in a person only when he has become pure by completing the punishment of his even karma. He is like a person who has completed his sentence of his crime and now he is ready to get away from the past and do good work. Here also instead of solving his problems, you must just enable him to help himself so that he can solve his own problems.

About this Author

Life is a mystery which can not be explained either by science or by scriptures. Truth has a body and a soul which we call science and religion. Contrary to popular perception, they are not opposed to each other but complement each other like body and soul. In fact, they can not exist without each other.

I am the founding member of The Science of Soul Foundation in India which works for the synthesis of the diverse disciplines of knowledge like science, religion, philosophy and arts. The website of the foundation is http://www.scienceofsoul.com

I am working for the creation of a synthesis between science and religion through my articles. I believe that everyone can understand this Truth by the use of intuition and reason. You can contact me at aksinghirs [a] yahoo.com if you wish to know more about the mystery which we call life.
