Visit the World From Your Living Room With Satellite TV

Television from all sorts of stations located in different parts of the world, delivered by bouncing signals from a satellite in the sky to a dish receiver with a box indoors on top of the TV is the technical definition of satellite television. There are several types and sizes of dishes to send these communications. The original antennae were very large dishes made of metal that had to be set up on a piece of ground or a pole. Today's dishes are compact and are even small enough to fit on a car. Satellite television is wireless transmission. Shows are not pre-empted by local events but are blocked out often by bad weather. Satellite transmissions are all digital and many are offered in High Definition.

Satellite has allowed rural homeowners to receive their favorite programs when cable television is not offered to them. Broadcast television is limited. It can only transmit a certain distance and the receiver has to be right in the line of sight to receive.

Satellites are in orbit around the earth. They transmit from up in the sky and their line of sight is greater because there are less obstacles.

The first satellite dishes were an awesome addition to television viewing. They also provided programs that were not meant to be viewed by just anyone who wanted to. Early dishes allowed viewers to access Canadian channels, NASA, and channels that were on Pay-for-view like Playboy.

Today's satellite is called Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) and the provider is the one who determines the channels that are offered. The customer is allowed to choose from among several different lists of channels to access programming for the family and kids, adults only, sports programming and music programming. The provider beams the programs to the customer (you) but he does not actually make the programs. He buys the right to broadcast the programs from different networks and companies such as NBC, HBO, and sports networks. A lot of satellite television is the same as programming for cable television but satellite also broadcasts specialty channels for foreign language groups in certain areas.

Recently even smaller satellite dishes have been produced to fit on top of recreation vehicles, vans and cars. The System broadcasts limited programming to some of the receivers such as an all children's package for the automobile to keep a person's kids quiet in the back seat. Other satellites are made inside a dome which is placed on top of the recreation vehicle and provides full programming with an inside receiver box. There is even a system that is contained in a package that can be taken on camping trips so that you don't have to miss your favorite TV show even out in the woods.

There is also the FTA or Free To Air system which offers programming for free. You have to buy your dish and receiver but there is no packaging free to consider. For example, you can get PBS, some local stations, some Fox channels, some AMC channels, and some foreign language channels. Whichever satellite you pick determines what you get.
