Video Marketing - Tips To Optimise Your YouTube Videos For Search Engines

Expert Author Lisa J Oliver

Video marketing is one of the latest incarnations of popular internet marketing techniques with which to drive traffic to a particular site. The search engines love videos, and so too do consumers as evidenced by the massive amount of hits on YouTube each day.

The potential for massive traffic, and hopefully similar conversion rates, is there for sure, but only if you treat the videos that you create as you would any other web property. That of course means, making sure the videos are highly optimised and easy for the search engines to love. Follow the simple tips below, and you'll know how to optimise your YouTube videos for search engines in no time.

1. Be mindful of your keywords

This may seem like common sense, and it should, but there are a number of videos on YouTube that could be performing much better than they are, simply because the creator forgot about their keywords, or doesn't know how to use them. You can change your keywords or add new ones but don't forget this, it is the single most important step, because without keywords you'll go nowhere.

2. Have a catchy title

Just like an article, the title is the first thing that catches someone's attention when they are trying to figure out where to click, and what to watch. Use a title that will make people curious and draw them in. Before you know it, they will have clicked through to your video, and hopefully wherever else you want them to go.

3. Tell the search engines what your video is about

This one may also seem like common sense, but if you don't tell the search engines what you video is about, by using keywords in the title, the description, and the tags, then they will try to figure it out for themselves, and this is not usually a good thing. Remember, again just like an article, keywords go in the title, the content body (description in this case) and in the tags. It's such an important concept, I said it twice.

4. Promote, promote, promote

A video is another web property that you are placing in your arsenal. It's potentially a very powerful type of web property, but the basic internet marketing concepts are the same. Once you upload your optimised video, go out and build links to it, in a variety of different ways, using an assortment of related anchor text combinations. Each link increases the likelihood of increased SERPS performance, and has hopefully gotten more eyes on your video. Each pair of eyes counts as a view, and the more views, the better.

5. Be active in the YouTube community

If you want your videos to do well, then you need to branch out a bit and show that you are a quality, contributing member of the community. Allow comments on your videos, and respond to them if you can. Comment on associated videos, and/or find videos related to yours and make a response video. Build your following. The more popular you are, the more popular your videos will be.

The above tips merely scratch the surface of using video marketing for profit and how to optimise your YouTube videos for search engines, but following these tips will put you well ahead of the game!
