Installing a Vented Gas Fireplace - What Not to Do
Print This Article Ezine Publisher Send To Friends Add To Favorites Post A Comment Suggest Topic Report Author

Trying to save money throughout the year requires a conscious effort all the time. When big expenses occur, something usually has to be cut somewhere else. When cold weather approaches, a vented gas fireplace may seem like a great solution. Then you find that the cost of installation makes the whole project go up in smoke. Should you decided to do this yourself, make sure to read the directions before you start and not just guess what you think you are going to need. Creating another half finished project is not what you want going on in the middle of a room. This type of project won't fit in a box in the basement or closet.

Should you try to tackle the installation of a vented gas fireplace on your own, here's what you don't want to do.

1. Run the Gas line. Unless you have done this before, this is something you don't want to do by yourself. Get a contractor for this part. Special fittings may be needed to tap into the main gas line leading to the house. These may also need to be replaced if they are old or you do not use the proper tools to take them off. If you would have to run a gas line from the outside, it needs to be buried properly and then run and to the vented gas fireplace. Let the professionals handle this part and you will be much happier and less aggravated.

2. Put in any old flue that's on sale. It absolutely has to be the right size or you risk running toxins into the house. A lousy fit and you will wind up essentially venting the fireplace into the room. You do not want to do that. Making everybody sick is not the point of a vented gas fireplace.

3. Don't read the directions. I mean, how hard can it be, right? Many projects like this come with somewhat complicated directions or worse yet, not enough direction. Spend some time and research your particular type of fireplace by its model and manufacturer. There are many DIY forums on the internet that are happy to answer your questions.

Probably the most important thing to avoid is not finishing a project of this sort. It not only creates an eyesore but you run the risk of losing essential parts if they are not attached in a timely manner.
