Vegetable Garden Layout Points to Consider

It is very important that we begin with an assessment of what we have, in term of the various factors which will affect what we are growing and how much etc.

The first thing we must do is look at the size of area we can devote to the Vegetable Garden Layout, now we may have an abundance of land from which to pick or we may just be picking some containers etc. What is our size will determine how much of each variety and of course if we must limit the variety we plant.

Secondly we should assess where the garden will be located, if we are going to select from a large area then we must look at the soil and the sunlight. Both of these factors will affect what and how much we can grow. Whilst some vegetables will grow in moderate sunlight or shade, the best results will be had from an area well exposed to sunlight. If we are using containers in limited spaces then we should look to position them in a nice sunlight area if possible. Also with containers we can select the type of soil we put in them ensuring that the soil has ample amounts of nutrients and fertilizers.

Soil is also important, if we have a good topsoil then there will be an easier dig and no problem with selection of the crop, however if we are very dry, we need to know if we can easily provide water on a regular basis so should consider our ease of access to water etc. Some soil like clay will need a bit of work and may need a lot of preparation in terms of breaking it up prior to planting some crops.

Also we will need to ensure adequate drainage as too much water will destroy the crop in the ground.

Once we have size, sun soil and location we can start to think about the what and when of our planting. The selection of what we are going to grow will be affected by the above points. Unless of course we were fortunate to have an abundance of land, good soil, easy access to water and lots of summer sun.

In our Vegetable Garden layout we will need to think about the size of the plants some take up a lot of space others not so much. Again having pre determined our size we can now look at the actual layout.

We must also ensure that we do not overcrowd some of the plants, if we have a bit of shade then remember the plants will spread more so give them more room.

Now we could talk about the style and symmetry of your layout but to me that is not the must important, how it look on a canvas is not import how it grows how much it grow and how well they taste this is important to me.

So be creative, just ensure all plants have adequate space that you do not mix and match plants which will cause problems for each other, information on this and other details can be found on our blog.

Enjoy your planting and good luck with your Vegetable Garden layout.
