If you have varicose veins, you've probably thought about what treatments you can get that will reduce or lessen both the appearance of varicose veins and the pain that they can cause. One of easiest procedures that can be done is sclerotherapy treatment.

Sclerotherapy varicose vein treatment is a procedure that can be done in your doctor's office or at any out-patient facility. The physician will use small needles to inject a chemical into the veins. It works by making the lining of the vessels irritated and hardened. After this the veins will fade. One session may be enough to get rid of most of the spider veins, or more appointments can be scheduled. While it is most often used on the legs, it can be also be used on the arms or on the face.

Sclerotherapy treatment can be done in under thirty minutes. There is very little pain involved with this procedure and no anesthesia is required when the procedure is performed. After the appointment over the counter pain reliever can be used if necessary. Compression bandages or compression hose can be worn after the appointment to lessen the pain. Help your circulation by walking regularly, but avoid any strenuous activity for a few days.

Sclerotherapy treatment is used on small varicose veins, also known as spider veins. It is not used for large saphenous vein removal. Other methods, such as stripping are used to remove large saphenous veins. Since these therapies can have more severe side effects, they are rarely recommended for the treatment of small spider veins.

If you are thinking about having sclerotherapy treatment or any other procedure done, first make an appointment with a vein removal doctor. They may be a vascular surgeon, a phlebologist, a plastic surgeon, or a dermatologist. If you have a health condition, you'll also want to consult your regular physician before undergoing any treatment. The vein removal doctor will be able to go over all of your options and answer any questions that you have. Together, you can decide the best course of action for removing the varicose veins
