Using Orchid Lights Indoors

Just like most plants, orchids too need ample amount of light in order to survive and grow. It is because of the light that they can undergo the process of photosynthesis. Along with light, orchids also need ample amount of water and nutrition in order to grow healthy, multiply, and bloom beautifully. Knowing the type of orchids that you have is necessary to be able to know the ample amount of light and water that should be given to your orchids. For those who are growing orchids indoors, using orchid lights or artificial lights can already provide the plants with sufficient amount of light that they need.

The good thing about using orchid lights or artificial lights is that the gardener can easily adjust the span of time that the lights will be turned on. For instance, if the gardener has orchids that only require a small amount of light, then turning the artificial lights for about 12 to 14 hours a day will already do the job. For those orchids that need plenty of light, then artificial lights may need to be turned on for around 15 to 18 hours daily. Another advantage of using artificial lights is that you can easily adjust the distance of the light from the plants. If you find that the plants receive too much heat because the lights are too close to the plants, then all you have to do is to raise the lights a little bit higher.

In order to determine how much light your type of orchids need, try to conduct a research. Gather information by talking to expert orchid growers or florists. You may also search the internet for information about the different orchid types as well as their light and water requirements. As you know, there are some orchids that need lots of exposure to the sun, while there are also some that needs to be kept more in shady conditions. One way to be able to determine what types of orchids you have is through observation. Soft growing orchids are usually those that love to be with shady conditions more than being exposed to sunlight, while hard growing orchids love long exposure to sunlight.

Once you have already determined if which is which, you will already have ideas about what orchids need to be exposed to prolonged orchids lights and which ones should only receive a few amount of light from your orchid lights. Often, those orchids that love shady conditions more than being exposed to light are those that grow healthy yet bloom very small and rarely while those that are exposed to prolong light exposure are those that bloom beautiful and plentiful flowers but have leaves that look sick and yellowish.
