Uses of Peppermint Essential Oils

Peppermint is a herb that has been used for traditional and holistic medicinal purposes for centuries. The peppermint essential oil is also known as brandy mint or balm mint, and is extracted from Mentha piperita.

One of the most common uses of peppermint essential oil is in aromatherapy due to its cooling and refreshing properties. It stimulates the mind, improves focus and also increases the mental ability. The oil is used to cool the skin, and reduce the redness, irritation and itchiness.

Another common use of peppermint is in dental care due to its powerful antiseptic properties. The oil helps relieve bad breath, and keeps the gums and teeth free from germs. Peppermint oil is added in many tooth pastes, and is also effective in treating the toothaches.

Treating the nausea and headache is also an important use of this essential oil, and you can directly apply the diluted oil on the forehead to get relief from headache. The oil is quite useful on treating the indigestion as well. Just add few drops of oil to the water and drink after the meals to get relief. The oil can effectively to remove the gas.

Another good use of peppermint essential oil is to get relief from stress, depression and mental exhaustion, as the oil is quite refreshing. It is also effective in reducing restlessness and anxiety. External use of the oil gives relief from pain. As the oil contains calcium antagonism, it helps alleviate pain, and also has wonderful cooling properties that help reduce fever.

It also contains menthol and it helps clear the respiratory tract. It gives instant or temporary relief from several respiratory problems such as nasal congestion, sinusitis, asthma, cold, cough and bronchitis.

Some of the other common uses of peppermint essential oil include treating irritable bowel syndrome, removing dandruff and lice, treating urinary tract infection, boosting immunity to various diseases, and improving blood circulation.

Another quality is to relieve flatulence, and diarrhea. Few drops of oil can be added to herbal tea to aid digestion and get relief from heartburn. The oil can be inhaled during the workout to boost the mood the reduce fatigue.

This oil is easily mixed with almond or olive oils to relieve sore feet. Ticks can be removed by applying the drop of the oil on the cotton swab and swabbing ticks with it.

While using peppermint oil, it is essential to avoid contact with sensitive skin, eyes and mucus membranes. Pregnant and lactation women should avoid its usage.
