If you find yourself buried under a lot of debt and unpaid bills, then it is time to create a budget. In order to get out of debt, you need to know how and where you are spending your money. Then, you need to figure out how much you should be spending. There is a reason wealthy people are wealthy - they have a budget and they know how their money is being spent. But don't worry, you don't have to be wealthy to benefit from a budget. You just need to understand how to set one up.

The first step to setting up a budget is to begin writing down every single dime you spend for a minimum of one month. Even if you buy something as simple as a pack of gum, you need make note of it. Put all of your receipts in an envelope and label the envelope with the appropriate month and year. Or if it is easier, use a computer program like Quicken to enter all of your expenses.

Next, write down all of your monthly expenses. These should not only include all of your regular bills like your mortgage, car, and insurance, but also your daily expenses such as coffee, a night out at the movies, or money you normally spend to eat out at a restaurant.

Finally, take the amount of income you take home each month and subtract all of your expenses. If you are spending more than you take home, then you need to make some serious changes before you get even deeper into debt. This might include negotiating with your creditors or even filing bankruptcy. Regardless of what steps you take, you will ultimately be in a much better situation since you will know where you stand financially.

Creating and sticking to a budget is easier than it might sound. The problem is that most people won't take the time to create a budget, let alone stick to one. Don't make that mistake and allow your debt to bury you even further. Take your first step toward a debt-free life by sitting down and creating your first budget. You'll be glad you did!
