Are you an expert? Chances are, if you own or run a business, you are an expert in something - or many things. Share your expertise to grow your business. Sharing your expertise helps you attract new clients, gain media attention and enlarge your network of prospects. That is a great, low-cost way to market your business.
Here are seven ways to share your expertise and grow your business:
- Present a workshop. Do you have a skill that can be shared quickly and easily in a short span of time? Invite customers, prospects and others in your network to attend. Suggest to attendees that they bring a friend or colleague as well. People like doing business with people they know and trust. By sharing your knowledge, you are fostering a positive relationship with these clients and prospects. Don't try to sell your product or service during the workshop but do have plenty of marketing materials on hand to share.
- Launch a newsletter. If you want to build a relationship with a client, you should be in touch a minimum of six times per year, and more often depending upon your product or service. A newsletter filled with tips and other worthwhile information is a great way to subtly show clients and prospects that you have a wealth of knowledge and experience as well as an interest in them.
- Become a speaker. Associations and community groups often need speakers. Get out the word that you are available. Provide a list of topics and your credentials. Be creative with your presentation.
- Volunteer. Does a local nonprofit organization need assistance from someone with your skill sets? As a volunteer, you have the opportunity to show that you can deliver a quality service. And - it's a nice thing to do!
- Connect with the local media. Reporters are always looking for a compelling story with a local slant. Before you distribute a press release, however, make sure it is newsworthy, timely and of interest to readers. A press release should not be an advertisement in disguise but should highlight your area of expertise.
- Publish articles in industry or professional publications. Reprints of published articles are great selling tools. To increase your chances of being published, research the publication before you submit an article or pitch an idea. Understand the audience and familiarize yourself with past issues so you are not submitting an article similar to one that was recently published. Follow writers' guidelines if provided.
- Publish on-line. There are many opportunities to share your expertise on-line, such as through blogs and forums. There are also several sites where you can post articles for free publication by e-zines. These posts help to build your on-line resume when people search for you on the Internet. A word of caution: If you want to increase your credibility as an expert, choose your words carefully. Be succinct and clear. In short, write like an expert!
