Use Window Valences to Spice Up a Room

Window valances will complete the appearance of your windows and add to the room's décor. Some decorating themes can actually be derived from the window treatments in the room. There are many types of valances ranging from flowing, romantic ones to wood ones. The type of window valance is determined by the purpose you want it to serve in the room's décor. Popular styles of valances are the swag, balloon, scarf and tailored style. Because they are available in all colors, floral and patterns, the options can be limitless.

The swag valance is probably the most common window valance and is the one commonly seen on kitchen windows. The swag has three pieces with a shorter center piece flanked by two longer pieces on each side. This is hung at the top of the window with a set of curtains hung near the center of the window. The valance allows light to enter the room and still allow privacy.

The balloon valance looks like a series of balloons hanging upside down from a rod. These valances tend to be more for the formal type of window treatment and also work for the feminine and romantic theme. A set of drapes or curtains are directly under the valance. This type of window treatment will require to separate curtain rods - one for the valance and one for the curtains.

A scarf valance is a very feminine and romantic style of window valance. A decorative or ornate curtain rod is best as it will be visible with this type of valance. The scarf valance is made from sheer, light weight fabric that is draped over the rod offering a soft, billowy appearance. It will usually touch the floor and admits light into the room.

For more traditional decors, the tailored window valance is your best bet. It is made of one thickness of fabric that is stiffer and heavier than other valances. It will block light at the top of the window and allow it to filter in through the draperies or curtains underneath. Because of the stiffness of the valance, it works well with ultra modern schemes.
