Use Split PST Tool and Increase the Performance of MS Outlook

Expert Author Jhon KR. Martin

If the size of the Outlook.pst file reaches around 1.5 GB or 2GB then Outlook starts performing slow i.e. it starts taking more than the usual time when you perform actions like send / receive emails, move emails from one folder to another, add contacts, etc. When you are performing any email related action Outlook may also hang in between due to which you need to restart it. Slow performance of Outlook is the wastage of your important time. In addition, the chances of the damage of Outlook.pst file get also increased.

This article describes the process to improve the performance of Outlook. Outlook's performance can be increased by executing following procedures in a row:

1. Delete Emails with Large Attachments: Emails with large attachments contributes a major part of the PST size. Therefore, you should delete the emails having large attachments so that the size of file can be reduced to a considerable extent. If the attachments are important then you can save them on your computer before deleting the emails having those attachments. Once you delete the emails, they will be transferred in the "Deleted Items" folder. Empty the "Deleted Items" folder too because until you do not empty the folder the emails will stay in the Outlook.pst file.

2. Compact PST: Once the emails having large attachments are deleted and the "Deleted Items" folder is also emptied, it is the time to compact the Personal Storage Table file. You must need to compact the file because until you do not compact the file its size will not be reduced. For example, you deleted emails of size 50 MB but when you check the size of Outlook.pst file you get shocked because the size is not reduced by 50 MB. This is because the emails are actually marked for deletion but not removed from PST. They will be removed when you compact the PST file.

3. Split PST using Split PST Tool: After deleting emails and compacting PST data file, if you still face the sluggishness of MS Outlook then you have to split PST using split PST tool.

By splitting the Personal Storage Table we mean to divide the large PST file into small and individual files. Outlook takes less time in fetching / updating information in small sized PST than a large sized Personal Storage Table file. Therefore, the large PST file should be split into small PST files.

Split PST tool enables you to break a large sized Outlook.pst file into various small sized Personal Storage Table files that co-ordinate individually with Outlook thus, improves the performance of MS Outlook. Using the split PST tool, you can break Outlook.pst into small files on various parameters like date, email ID, folders, size, etc. The split PST tool supports MS Outlook 2000, Outlook 2002, Outlook 2003, and Outlook 2007. The software can be installed on any version of Windows operating system to divide a large Personal Storage Table file into small PST files. This way you can improve the performance of MS Outlook.
