The Dargah is located in the city of Ajmer, in the centre of Rajasthan, and is popularly known as 'Ajmer Sharif' (Holy Ajmer). The place is frequented by people belonging to any religion, caste or creed.

Significance

This is the place where the mortal remains of the Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chishti sahab are buried. Moreover, it is the site of the largest Muslim fair in India, i.e. Urs Fair. Lakhs of devotees from all over the globe gather here during the fair to pay homage to the Khwaja Sahab on his Urs (death anniversary). The fair is organized during the first six days of Rajab (seventh month of the Islamic calendar).

Background

Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chishti sahab are renowned as 'Gharib Nawaz' (literally meaning 'the protector of the poor') as he dedicated his entire life while serving the mankind. Basically he belonged to Persia and is credited for establishing the Chishtia order of fakirs in India.

Rituals

While seeking the blessings of the Khwaja Sahab, the devotees make rich offerings called 'nazrana' at the Dargah. These nazranas include rose and jasmine flowers, sandalwood paste, perfumes, chadar, ghilaph and neema etc.

During the celebrations, professional singers or 'Qawwals' from all over the world gather here and sing the praises of the saint in high pitched voice in groups with the rhythm of various instruments.

The festival is initiated on the 25th of Jamadi-ul-Akhir (sixth lunar month) with the flag hoisting ceremony which is done by the Sajjada Nashin (successor representative) of Chishtis. All the devotees cross the main gate of the Dargah with the belief that they will be assured a place in heaven.

'Ghusal' is also a popular ritual according to which the entire tomb is washed with rose water and sandalwood paste on the 1st of Rajab. Natural perfume is spread over the tomb and it is covered with an embroidered silk cloth by the Sajjada Nashin. Kheer (milk-pudding) is cooked in large pots called 'degs' and distributed to the devotees as 'tabarruk' (blessed food).
