Let's start by taking a look at the word Easter. Easter is a heathen or pagan term ( which refers to those who do not believe in God ). Our English word Easter actually came from the saxon goddess named Eastre who was known as the goddess of the dawn. Her name also means movement towards the rising sun. You can study more about this in I Kings 11:5 & 11:33, in II Kings 23:13 and Genesis 14:5. Eastre the saxon goddess was called the queen of heaven (read Jeremiah 7:17-19) and was worshiped each year at the spring festival called Easter. Easter, as we know it today, began when Christians attempted to convert pagan people from their traditional beliefs, but strong resistance by the pagan people (who did not believe in GOD) led to Christians compromising and adopting paganism Jeremiah 10:2 Thus says the Lord: "Do not Learn the way of the Gentiles." Sadly so many church leaders still remain unlearned to the true teachings about Easter even unto this day, and therefore continue year after year and generation after to pass on a lie straight from the enemy.
At this Easter festival, people would worship human idols and things of nature such as the sun. (Read Ezekiel 8::16 ) to understand how SUN RISE SERVICE actually came from a pagan ritual of worshiping the sun. The goddess Eastre (Easter) was considered the goddess of the growing light and spring which was associated with fertility and different immoral acts.
One such story has her entertaining children by performing a trick that changed her pet bird into a rabbit which is one way the bunny rabbit came to be a part of Easter; the rabbit would then lay colored eggs and she would pass them out to the children at the festival, the rabbit was symbolic of fertility rights and the people who were a part of the festival would participate in an orgy with a young virgin girl.
This type of worship by the pagan people had become widespread and was experiencing much resistance by the Christian churches in Europe; however the Christian churches was not able to abolish the pagan beliefs, but instead chose to adopt and modify some of the pagan ways by allowing unholy worldly celebrations such as Easter into their Christian churches. Of course this major compromise has affected Christian Churches throughout history.
One might say but the word Easter is in the Bible....Acts 12:4 And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people. Here the word Easter is a mistranslation from the original manuscripts. The correct word was and properly translated throughout the Bible is the Greek word pascha which means Passover, and I Corinthians 5:7&8 teaches us Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened for even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: (8) therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
And the truth is by celebrating Easter, we are actually doing the complete opposite of what Christ would have us to do in remembrance of His death, burial and resurrection. Most Christians believe the Passover only had to do with the children of Israel and therefore is only commemorated by the Jews, but Christ became our passover and by knowing the truth you can be set free!! This is what Christians, church leaders. and pastors everywhere should be celebrating.
The saddest truth of all is that Passover ( the resurrection of Christ) has been pushed practically out of the teachings of the church during the time when it should be remembered. It has become my responsibility not to reject the death and resurrection of our savior, but to say that the resurrection of Christ should have never been associated with the worldly celebration called Easter.
Sadly Christians could offer nothing better, so they simply claimed what existed as their own, changed the story slightly, and then tried to cover up and break the people's connection to the past. A small amount of compromise can be such a dangerous thing when it concerns the doctrine and teaching of the Bible.
Many times the truth can almost seem like a lie, but Jesus said' And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free'. (John 8:32)
