Unemployment and It's Impact on Families, Teenagers and Young Adults

Most Americans are feeling the impact of high unemployment in some manner. It's not just parents, but it's also teenagers and young adults that are struggling with the inability to find employment. While many in Washington deny that we are in a recession, most Americans come face to face with it on a daily basis. It has been and continues to be a fact of life. We are also facing inflation, something that neither Washington or main stream media talk about.

Families are struggling to make ends meet and unemployment insurance is only a short term fix. Many Americans have tried to reduce the amount of money they spend on utilities, their grocery bill, and money spent on entertainment or eating out. Many families have had to enlist the help of their teenagers or young adults to help with family finances. Unfortunately, the number of jobs available for teenagers and young adults continues to shrink. Summer jobs have not been has plentiful this year because of the current financial crisis that families and employers have been facing.

Parents as well as their children are spending hours on the internet as well as browsing local print ads looking for work. Potential employers are receiving resumes and applications by the dozens and even hundreds of dozen for one job. Teenagers and young adults with limited to no job experience have no chance of securing employment in this job frenzy.

Many of these individuals realize that education is their only hope for a brighter future. But with their parent unable to pay for college tuition and no hope of receiving any type of financial aid, they know that they have no way out. The struggle to find and keep a job can be overwhelming to these individuals. Many have already given up any hope of finding employment.

America and it's citizens are facing an economic meltdown, very similar to what our parents and great grandparents faced during the Great Depression. Unfortunately, we now no longer have any industrial base to help pull us out of our financial crisis. We have become a society of consumers, but with no job, there is no money and no credit to continue our consumption of non necessities. A roof over our heads and food in our stomachs must come first.

Americans of all ages are looking to Washington for answers, with little to no hope. Our young people are ill-equipped to face this financial dilemma. Most of them have never had to do without the basic necessities. Most don't know what it is like to go to bed hungry, dirty and cold. They have grown up on McDonald's, cable television and the internet. They don't have the coping skills necessary to work 2 and 3 jobs just to get by. For that matter, many parents don't have the skill set necessary to cope with the current financial crisis.

American families are in a downward spiral of massive portions. With this downward spiral comes fear, hopelessness, dis pare, anger and hate. Social unrest maybe around the corner and American families are totally unprepared for this possible event. Our children's future appears bleak and there seems to be no hope of any change in the near future.

Our leaders in Washington need to address this issue with all haste and with honesty. American families do not need to hear the "Blame Game" anymore. They don't need to hear false job creation numbers anymore. They are well aware of how many jobs there are, where they are and how many applicants they are up against for any job. Americans need their leaders to start working on their behalf, and not for the special interest groups and foreign interests.

American families are under fire and many are without hope. We may lose an entire generation to these desperate time. We need honest answers and honest solutions now.

About this Author

As a working wife and mother, I am quite aware of the difficult times that we live in. With high unemployment, families in this country are finding in difficult to make ends might. Our political leaders in local, state and federal levels are too far removed from the average American to understand our concerns.

Time and time again we voice our opinion and the media ignore us or simple view us as simple minded. We tell our so called legislative representatives what we want or don't want and they either ignore us or bow to special interests. While, one person can not turn the tide, I do have the Right and ability to voice a perspective on the current political and social atmosphere in this country.
