Oprah Winfrey has for years now been shooting her favorite books to the top of the best seller list, through her book club. Simply by mentioning a title she's reading and promoting, she sends book sales through the roof. Now Fox News' Glenn Beck is following suit: Glenn's influence on book best sellers is almost spooky. He mentions a book one day on his show, and the next it's at the top of Amazon.com's best seller list.
These two media giants offer a solid analogy for understanding online PR. Glenn "broadcasts" a book title - which is really a keyword or key phrase. People search for that key phrase, find Amazon, and buy the book.
Well good news - in today's tech-centered world, everybody is a potential publisher. You too can "broadcast" your key phrase of choice. Glenn shouts them to readers during his on-air rants; you can send your key phrases out over Web using your website, blogs, articles and online press release - optimized for search.
Let's use a practical example. Oprah's keywords are book titles, and her audience is viewers. Your keywords and phrases are the central terms of your business you want found by, when people search for you online. Your audience - Net surfers.
If I open up a Charlotte public relations business, my key phrases I might want searched for would include, well, Charlotte public relations. So I can start by making sure my website uses this phrase throughout my site - starting way up in the title tag and then down through the headers and body copy.
That's my first method for shouting my keywords at Net surfers: Google will "index" my website and see all of these keywords put in all the right places - and then decide my site should show up when people surf for Charlotte public relations.
Next I can blog, and I can make sure I include this key phrase of Charlotte PR in my title, and in copy.
A third solid method for spreading my message to an audience of Internet surfers is the online press release. In the old days press releases had one purpose - getting messages in print. Now online press releases can bypass the media entirely: Services such as MarketWire send your release directly to the Googles of the world.
And you guessed it - your release uses the keyphrase in the title, and in body copy. Here's the most important part: I want to make sure Charlotte public relations is an actual hyperlink - and it links back to my website. This important step of online PR tells Google to closely associate the linked term with my website.
These tools offer a starting point for your online PR efforts. When all of your efforts work in sync around quality key phrases, you too can have a powerful broadcasting voice.
