Type 2 Diabetes - Two Important Tips For Anyone Diagnosed With Diabetes!

Expert Author Beverleigh H Piepers

Information is powerful on any subject, but especially where your health is concerned. If you have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, knowing as much about you can about your disease and knowing how to best manage it, is critical to not just living with diabetes but in helping you to avoid what are known as diabetic complications.

Although diabetes care has advanced over the years with new tools and new testing methods, one principle remains unchanged. Education is the key to being successful in your diabetes care and reaching and maintaining the best possible level of good health.

There are challenges to face each day, and some are easier to conquer than others. Be open to making changes in your care as you live with diabetes. Your body will naturally go through changes each year, and these changes will need you to make adjustments. You will need to be a lifelong student on the subject of diabetes.

The first tip is really to keep the stress of living with diabetes and of life generally, at a minimum. This is essential and is often overlooked. You are the one who is going to be making decisions regarding your blood sugar control and you are really the only person who can control the stress factors in your life.

Excessive stress, be it from finding diabetes stressful to deal with, (at least some of the time), or coping with the many everyday stress issues of life, can complicate the management of your Type 2 diabetes. As well as raising blood sugar levels, excessive worry can increase your blood pressure and lower the effect of your immune system. Anything you deem to be threatening to you can trigger the stress response... even being concerned about a rise, or even a decline, in your blood sugar levels could be one of your triggers.

So, its how you react to what you perceive as danger that brings about stress. We all have our beliefs as to what we see as "danger". Whether the danger is real or not, our mind and body reacts in a sudden and striking manner.

Tip No. 1 is to evaluate your mental stress level and see how much it is responsible for affecting your blood sugar. Researchers have found lowering stress levels has a direct impact on people with diabetes.

Tip No. 2 is to take a look at your beliefs. Beliefs are your interpretations of various experiences in your life. They become your point of view, your attitude, your expectations and even your values. So they are your perceptions by which you live. They determine how you think, how you feel, and how you live.

How do your beliefs affect your Type 2 diabetes? Do you feel shame or a sense of guilt for having Type 2 diabetes? Beliefs affect your emotional well-being. Your beliefs have the power to affect what happens to you: they affect how you handle your eating plan and whether or not you feel you are worth the effort it takes to reverse your Type 2 diabetes.

Operating with misbeliefs in control will result in you coping ineffectively with diabetes and life generally. When you look at your beliefs and change them, you change what the beliefs mean and what they do. Changing your beliefs means you are taking control of what you think, feel and do.

The more you are in control of what happens to you, the less stress you will experience and the more control you will take with the type of foods you eat and the amount of exercise you do. When you live on "automatic pilot" and don't pay attention to your unconscious, faulty beliefs, you hand over control to them and sabotage your ability to control your blood sugar and reverse your Type 2 diabetes.
