Two Ball Dribbling Unleashed

If you have at all tried to master ball handling, I'm sure at some point you've been introduced to two ball dribbling. While many players are finding dribbling one ball hard enough when starting out, who has time for two balls right? Well think again.

Are Two Balls Better Than One?

When it comes to dexterity, hand-eye coordination I think two ball dribbling is probably one of, if not the best thing you can do in basketball for your ball handling. But the single most important benefit that you'll get out of two ball dribbing in my opinion is this - improving your weak dribbling hand.

If you have a weak hand and you attempt two ball dribbling, that weak hand will quickly get exposed. So it only makes sense that the more you work in this area, the more you can balance out both hands.

Why Two Balls Aren't Always Better

I agree with most people on two ball workouts being a good thing. But if I had a limited amount of time, I'd only work on one ball. Here's why. In the game, you dribble with one ball. So if I could work on only one thing it would be my moves. I'd master some moves and being better with controlling the ball. Here's a story to prove my point on this.

I have worked a ton of basketball summer camps in my day. And I never forget this one ball handling expert that one of my good friends brought in to the camp. My friend ran the camp and he really wanted to give the campers their money's worth. So he brought in this dribbling guru.

Now this guru was a well-known, pretty famous guy. Probably the best dribbler the world has ever seen when it came to two-ball dribbling. He looked like a harlem globetrotter with two balls.

But here's the thing. Later one afternoon after the camp was over, all of the camp instructors and counselors, we all played some pick-up games with this "dribbling master." And much to my surprise, this dribbling guru was so easy to guard. I'm talking a piece of cake. He didn't have explosive moves off the dribble. Sure he was a good ball handler, he didn't lose the ball or get it stolen much. But if you really want to be a nightmare for the defense off the dribble, you will need more.

So my point is clear. He was great with two balls. But when it was game-time he wasn't so effective.

Why Less Is More With Two Balls

If you are new to this type of ball handling training here are some simple workouts I'd recommend you do. Even if you're a seasoned pro at ball handling, I'd still recommend you add these to your regimen.

It doesn't need to be complicated either with two balls. You don't need to be blindfolded while juggling bowling pins and dribbling two balls. I have seen some pretty outrageous stuff out there on this topic. I'm from the school of thought that less is more. Here are the drills:

1. Alternating Dribble - This is when you dribble with your left and as the ball goes down with your left hand it should be coming up with the other and vice versa.
2. Simultaneous Dribble - This is when you dribble with both hands at the same time. So both balls should be going down and coming up at the same time with both hands.
3. High-Low Dribble - This is when you dribble the ball low with one hand and high with the other hand. Start out in place and then to half-court and back to the baseline. Repeat with the other hand.

NOTE: If you think dribbling two balls is all you need to get great at ball handling think again. Remember, the game is played with one ball. So it's important to master being explosive with a single ball. So use two ball dribbling as a spice in your overall ball handling development program. But it isn't the end-all be-all.

Also, make sure in everything that you do, you work hard and go game speed with your ball handling. You don't have to be a speed demon right out of the gates. But push yourself to improve, work on quickness, and that's how you get better. Take your work-outs seriously.

I've figured out more sneaky stuff like these two ball dribbling drills to have you handling the ball like a yo-yo on a string in 4 weeks or less. Visit my site for the Free mini-course at http://DribblingSecrets.com now.
