Twitter Marketing - Should You Use Your Real Name Or Company Name?

Expert Author Henrik V Blunck

There is no doubt about the fact that branding deals with recognition, so which choice you should make depends on what you need to brand. If you - the founder - are the main focus of your branding effort, it wouldn't make much sense to use the company name as your user name for Twitter. And the same is true when it comes to the other type of branding. This could for instance be Pepsi. Not many people know who is the CEO of Pepsi, but Pepsi is the product people will be searching for if they want information about Pepsi and new beverages etc. In the same way, it isn't everybody that knows that Dr. AdSense, a.k.a. Joel Comm, has a company called Infomedia Inc. People associate him with AdSense - or some of his other products, and the brand is therefore Joel Comm, not the company name.

Things to Consider When Setting Up User Name

You need to consider whether you want to run all tweets in one language, or whether you want to run accounts for each of the main languages. Likewise you need to set up a specific person, or select few in one fixed group, to control the Twitter profile. The style of writing should fit the brand you are trying to create.

Likewise, setting your tweets as protected will disallow others from seeing your tweets until you are accepted by the user, and that will greatly limit your branding effect, and consequently result in far fewer people seeing what you tweet about.

You should link to your Twitter profile from the relevant webpages so that people know where they can follow what you tweet about. You can't count on people using the search field to find you, so it's always a good idea to supply the link yourself as a service to your users.

What You Should Not Do on Twitter

I have seen some situations where one company used many different employees to write on their Twitter account, and they added a number of initials to their tweets to identify who was writing. This confuses people when you include irrelevant information in your tweets - and confusion is never a good thing if you want to deliver a clear message.

Likewise, you should give replies to those who write questions to you. Otherwise you won't get the full benefit of Twitter, and people will then lose interest in following you.

In Conclusion

Use the above tips to adjust your way of tweeting to your followers, and you will find that you will get many more followers from using Twitter effectively, and you will be building Twitter power as a result of implementing these things.
