Social Networking is so new yet it seems like it has always been around. Wikipedia claims: "While it could be said that email and websites have most of the essential elements of social network services, proprietary encapsulated services gained popularity in the first decade of the 21st century."
What are the next advancements coming from Twitter?
Twitter has been under pressure to allow users ("tweople") to organize their followers. At the moment, every follower is in one long list. If you have a small number of followers (90% of Twitter users have under 100 followers) then you likely know them all and can easily find anyone by simply scrolling for a moment or two. So, it is not a problem.
However, there are also big players on Twitter who have millions of followers. That's unwieldy. If a big player wishes to categorize them into different groups, there is no function within Twitter at the moment to do so.
So, Twitter is now beta-testing Twitter Lists. This will be a way to create categories (or Lists) and then invite your own followers or others' followers to join your Lists. Indeed, you can even follow Lists and have Lists follow you. With time, the social networking world will figure out the best way to use this new feature and Twitter itself will make changes and programmers around the world will write programs to support Lists.
Twitter Lists is already quietly released but not fully functional. Watch for it. It will be a big enhancement and it will be very useful for many users on Twitter.
