Turning a Dorm Room Into a Comfortable Living Space

Going away to college can be a big adjustment for kids. Not only have you left behind friends who have gone off to other schools themselves, you are greeting a new phase in your own life without family members close by to support you. You new life will take awhile to get used to and in the midst of it all, you will be adjusting to a new living arrangement. Those who are lucky get to choose their own roommate or they get a roommate who they hit if off with right away. In some cases, freshman get to room alone, which is great for some people but others get lonely.

If you are on your way to college in a town far away from home, it is important to give yourself a space that is personalized that offers you comfort. At the end of the day following your classes, you want to come home to a room that, even if small, offers you the feeling of home. Dorm rooms can have cold, uninviting spaces but with a little planning and some creativity, you can turn yours into an area where you will want to spend time. Even if the room initially looks like all the rest on your floor, you can personalize the space so you have somewhere to go when you are feeling homesick.

The same rules for making a space feel good in your home apply to a dorm room. Create a personalized, organized space that suits your personality. There are plenty of organization options for even the smallest, boxiest dorm rooms. You may not have the space or money for anything elaborate like mezzanines or pallet racking, but you can go beyond the traditional milk crates with wooden shelving that can be painted to match the décor.

Most of the time you will not have an option to paint your dorm room walls, but sometimes buildings do allow this. If you have a desire to turn your dorm room walls a different color, be sure to check with the school before doing so. However, if paint is not allowed, there are other options for adding color. You can hang tapestries on the wall, hang posters, or secure fabric to the wall temporarily with fabric adhesive. Flooring is also another way to bring color into a room. There are a number of brightly colored rugs on the market that are sized especially for small dorm room spaces. The room may feel cozier if you use area rugs to section of a sleeping area, a lounging area, and a study area. Even if these spaces are small, it can help you stay organized by having a different area for each activity.

Finally, it is important to personalize the space even further. Once you have chosen colors you love, you can add accessories to a space that will make it uniquely your own. Bring photos from home of your family and friends and hang them on walls or display them on shelves. You will feel most comfortable in a space that reminds you of the friends and family you have back home.
