Losing your job is never pleasant. Unfortunately, an increasing amount of people are dealing with the loss of their job due to the economic crisis. It doesn't help that the search for a new position is tough. There aren't that many openings available, and there's a lot of competition out there.
The harsh reality of unemployment isn't easy to deal with. There are mouths to feed and a roof that needs to be kept over your family's head. It can also be demoralizing, especially when companies don't get back to you about applications, and when you're left with nothing much to do during the day, apart from job hunting. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to keep your spirits up, increase your chances of employment and to possibly turn the situation into an opportunity.
Voluntary Work
Voluntary work, by definition, doesn't pay. However, it does have its benefits. First of all, it will get you out of the house and amongst other people. Instead of sitting in the house, stressing about your situation, you'll be doing something to take your mind of things. This does help, and the feeling you'll get from helping others is very worthwhile.
It will also look good on your CV. Potential employers like to see that someone is active and enjoys their work. Whilst doing voluntary work you'll gain more experience, and you might receive useful training, which can boost your credentials.
If you're thinking of a career change, getting a voluntary placement in the field of your choice will help you get a feel for the job and some valuable experience.
Many voluntary organizations will help with travel expenses, so you won't be out of pocket.
All in all, helping others can be helpful to you.
Training and Education
A spell of unemployment can be a good time to think about further education. If you've been stuck in a job you didn't really enjoy, why not see if you can retrain? If you did enjoy your job, there might be additional qualifications you can get to give you that edge over other candidates.
Whilst some courses are expensive, job centres and employment agencies may be able to help you with training and education. Community colleges and learning centres often give a discount to people out of employment, and may even offer some free courses.
An additional benefit is that you'll be actively working towards a better future, and that piece of paper at the end of your course will be of value for the rest of your life.
Starting Your Own Business
Starting your own business sounds expensive, and it can be. This depends on the type of business. An increasing number of people are choosing to work from home, which cuts out a lot of expenses.
If you're thinking about going down this route, I will give you a word of warning - please don't fall for a scam. There are companies and individuals who sadly are taking advantage of the unemployed. They'll offer work from home, but to start your business you'll need to pay them a certain amount of money for materials. Most often, these materials are worthless and you'll end up out of your money with nothing to show for it.
If you want to start your own business, it is best to do a lot of research. What are your skills? Is there a gap in the market and a demand for your goods or services? Who can help you? Do you know anyone with skills and knowledge that might be of value to you?
Job centres will be able to offer you advice and point you in the right direction. There are also some reputable agencies out there who will be able to answer your questions.
Self-employment is not for everyone. It's a risk, and it's a lot of hard work. On the other hand, being your own boss is very rewarding, and there are plenty of success stories to inspire a prospective business owner. It can be an opportunity to have the career of your dreams.
If you're unemployed, the important thing is to not give up. Though it can feel like everything is against you, there are opportunities waiting for you. Best of luck in your search!
