Truths About Shock Collars

Shock collars are controversial, but are they actually dangerous? Many people who have used them indicate that they are not. They say they are safe and a truly effective way of modifying their pets' worst behaviors.

There are some points to take into account before using a shock collar.

It is important to consider how a shock collar works. First, it monitors the frequency of your pet's vocal chord vibration. If it gets too loud or too high, it responds by administering a small, brief shock to your pet.

What happens when the shock happens is that your pet feels a small and very brief sense of discomfort. It isn't actually painful for the pet. Some compare it to the sense that you feel if you get a static electricity shock.

You should know what size of collar to buy before you buy it. Use a tape measure to get an accurate measurement of your animal's neck. If you don't have one of those, get a string or ribbon and wrap it once around the animal's neck. Then measure that length with a ruler. Collars generally come in three sizes: Small, medium and large.

When you receive your new collar, you should be able to set its level. Collars are capable of administering a range of shock levels; you should begin with the lowest level of electricity. If your pet doesn't respond to that level, you can increase it until it reaches a functional level.

Don't use the collar forever. Once your pet has modified its behavior to the point that you desire, you can curtail the use of the shock collar.

The shock collar is a behavioral tool; even after you have stopped using it, your pet should still associate its unpleasant behaviors with the unpleasantness of the collar. If you have to, you can use it when necessary.
