Faith
If you do not have the faith to completely trust in your swing then it is highly unlikely that you will execute the shot you want. Without complete faith in your ability, your mind at both a conscious and unconscious level will interfere with the automatic working of your swing. Think of it this way. Your mind has a stored memory (Neural Pathways) on how to execute the swing move that has given you your best shots and great rounds. Without the faith and trust your doubts will interfere with that brain program.
Think about how many things you do every day without interfering with the natural sequence of muscle movements that your mind controls in a beautiful and elaborate sequence to make you move and complete your task. Like walking, running, picking things up. Have you ever thought how many muscle moves it takes to make a cup of coffee from sitting on the couch to going to the kitchen making the drink and then returning to your sitting room?
Do you consciously try to control your digestive system, lung function, liver, kidneys, blood ph and many thousands more body functions your mind is controlling every second of the day? Of course not, you have the faith that your unconscious mind knows best and besides, you could not do it consciously if you tried.
Yet when it comes to something as simple as a golf swing, where our lives are not dependent on it, we feel the need to try and control what is going on as soon as a doubt creeps in, a slight loss of faith. The ironic thing is that the more you try to control your swing, the worse it gets. The more you have faith in your unconscious mind to control your swing and move the golf ball toward the target, the better your game will get.
Having complete faith in your unconscious ability and swing will not guarantee that you hit every shot great and it will not rule out the possibility of a poor shot but it will give you the ability to play your best golf consistently.
Remember a time when you had a really bad front nine probably because you were trying too hard, expected too much and put pressure on yourself, hit one or two bad shots and then tried even harder to control your swing. Have you ever stood on the 10th tee and looked at your card in disgust, realising you have blown the monthly medal completely, or some other competition? What happens next is the proof that you should play with faith and without worry. You chuck your card away and not caring about your score you swing away and just hit the darn ball. You end up shooting a great back nine.
Have faith, trust yourself and your swing, after all it is all you have on the day and you cannot change it so you may as well trust it and have fun shooting better scores when you do.
