DELHI ZOO
Delhi Zoo or The National Zoological Park, is located next to famous historical monument, Old Fort also called as Purana Qila, on Mathura road in south Delhi. This zoo was established in the year 1959. Delhi zoo is believed to be one of Asia's best zoos, as it provides natural habitat to more than 2000 species of animals and birds houses. Many varieties of animals and birds belonging to different continents like Africa, America, Australia etc. find a home at this zoo.
This place is locally known as " Chidyaghar" among the Delhi people. Good transport facilities like buses, auto- rickshaws, taxis and metro rail are provided for tourists visiting this place.
At the entrance of the zoo, you can find a large lake and the Mughal Kos Minar. After about 1 km of winding pathway, it divides into two directions. Along with wildlife, the right side of the zoo consists of Library, where information about animals, birds, plants, and rare zoological species of India can be gathered.
When you start walking along the right side of the zoo, you come across cages of animals like, Chimpanzee, Hippopotamus, Spider monkey, African wild Buffalo, Gir Lion, and Zebras etc. Delhi zoo provides natural habitat to many varieties of animals, birds and reptiles in this artifitial surroundings.
When you move towards left of the pathway, you can find aquatic animals with many number of migratory birds like Peafowl etc. When you reach at the heart of the zoo, you come across underground Reptile Home Complex for the nocturnal animals, such as King Cobra, Pythons and other species.
When we talk about Fauna of Delhi zoo, there are around 200 varieties of trees, like Delhi Bistendu, drought resistant Lahura trees, the Phulani hedges, hanging deep yellow Alamtas etc.
Here you can find almost all the varieties of Deer and many endangered species of India like the Leopard, Elephant, and White Tiger from Rewa. Other than these you can even find other animals such as Black Buck, Indian Rhinoceros, Indian Gazelle, Leopard Cat, Lion tailed macaque and Hippopotamus.
As the area is large, all the animals are provided with many facilities including spacious enclosures for their survival.
It is said that, Delhi zoo is the favorite destination place for migrant birds during winter as the lake at the entrance of the zoo, is filled with many number of migrant birds from all over, like Ducks, Storks and other water birds.
