Treatment and Cure for Anxiety Attacks

When you are getting yourself treated for anxiety disorders, it is very important for you to know the kind of treatment and all about it. Most often, cognitive-behavioral therapy and exposure therapy are used - they focus on behavior and not just the underlying psychological issues from the past. Behavioral therapy to control anxiety attacks generally take at least 5 and 20 weekly sessions.

To deal with anxiety attacks, cognitive-behavior therapy is used - this focuses on thoughts as well as behaviors. These help you identify and challenge your negative patterns of thinking and the irrational beliefs which may be fueling your anxiety levels. There is also exposure therapy - in which you are asked to confront your fears in a safe and regulated environment. You are given repeated exposures to your individual trigger, in reality or in imagination, and thus you are gradually put in a better position to deal with the feared object or situation. Thus, the anxiety attacks gradually diminish, as your sense of control increases.

There may also be medical treatment for anxiety disorders - there are various medicines that are prescribed, like antidepressants and benzodiazepines. However, to make the whole thing most effective, ideally behavioral therapy should be combined with medication for the best results. However, it is important to note that sometimes medication can cause nasty side effects, so it is always a good idea to research the medicine, weigh the benefits and risks - that way, you and your doctor can make an informed decision about whether medication should be used for your anxiety attacks.

Sometimes medication may only be needed at times, perhaps before the possible time of an anxiety attack - like before boarding an airplane, or before making a formal presentation at work. However, for OCD and GAD, medication over a longer period of time may be necessary.
