Traits of a Successful Salesperson - Top 6 List

Successful salespeople seem to have many similarities as well as many differences.  Not all of them are outgoing or overly friendly.  They don't all look like runway models or dress the same.  Some of them aren't even that articulate or well spoken.  So what are the common characteristics or traits that almost all successful sales professionals have in common?  Well here is a list of my top 6 traits that make a salesperson successful.

  1. They are all able to set great goals.  They know how to set the goals and they know how to achieve them.  You see, the most successful people have a way of figuring just how far they can push themselves without making a goal unattainable.  But at the same time they push the boundaries of their capabilities and are able to soar to new levels.
  2. They are all able to master their time management skills.  Many people with loads of talent are not successful simply because they don't know how to manage their time each day.  Rich sales people always seem to have more time to get the important things accomplished.  They figure out how to get more done in less time.
  3. They are able to master the game of numbers.  They set a goal for how many calls or appointments or meetings they need to have and they hit those numbers.  Many times the biggest difference between the average salesperson and the superstar is the number of sales calls they make per day.  The great ones always seem to be able to hit higher selling numbers.
  4. They all have an ability to get the decision maker.  Selling success isn't always about how many people you sell to, but often about who you are selling to.  All of the successful salespeople I've been around always seem to find the right person to get in front of.  That inevitably leads to more sales.
  5. They are all great and making their prospects feel like they are buying rather than being sold to.  There are many techniques that can help in this area and this site can be especially helpful with this.  Learn how to make your prospect feel that they are in control and choosing to buy from you.
  6. They are always able to find new ways to get someone to buy.  They think outside the box and come up with creative and new ideas.  They don't use all the stale techniques that everyone else is using.
I have found that these characteristics are common in almost all successful salespeople I have been around.  Learning how to master all of these is the key to being rich.
