How do I hit the golf ball further?
Now there's a question that I guaranty every golf professional has been asked several times. We have all heard the word coil or torque when referring to a golf swing. Although we have heard it, do we understand it? And if so, do we implement it in our golf swings?
Creating torque, or coiling, in a golf swing is when we create resistance between the lower body and the upper body. If you pay close attention to the lower body in a good golf swing, you will notice that it stays relatively quiet. While the upper body rotates around the spine.
What does it mean to keep the lower body quiet? Should my lower body be in a locked position?
Absolutely not. Your legs, nor any other part of your body should be locked. Notice the amount of space that we have between our knees at address. We can create resistance between our lower and upper body by maintaining as much of that space as possible during our back swing. The resistance that you should feel is mainly the stretch that occurs in your back.
A classic move in the golf swing, that is a guarantied loss of club head speed, is when the lead foot rises to the toe during the back swing. Based on what you have read thus far, I hope you have a picture in your head of the entire body rotating back. Thus creating no resistance between lower and upper body.
Before I conclude, I do want to point out one thing. I stated that the lead foot rising to the toe during the back swing is a definite loss of club head speed. Some of you may be thinking to yourselves, "Jack Nichols lifted his left foot." I agree. However there is an enormous distinction between lifting the lead heel slightly and getting up on the lead toe.
