Tip Number One
Let's consider what is necessary for an appropriate tow vehicle. First consideration is the wheelbase. For stability in towing live weight, you need a proper wheelbase. Remember in the past, the basic truck cab and eight foot bed combination? With all the different combinations available now, pick something that equals the wheelbase of a basic cab and eight foot bed. For example, a short bed truck should be fine as long as there is a extended cab, or crew cab. You get the idea.
Examples of inappropriate choices would be a Bronco-type vehicle, that lacks the proper wheelbase.
Tip Number Two
Second to consider is having enough power. It is no fun hauling over a mountain pass with no oomph! Many trucks today come with a heavy duty package that usually includes a tow package. This allows for extra power, a larger radiator, wiring, and receiver.
Consider the tonnage. A half ton truck is fine for pulling a two-horse trailer with one or two horses. However, the performance capacity will be compromised if you add a camper. You need a three-quarter ton truck to add a camper to the combination.
If you get a manual transmission, you will have a few more horsepower to play with.
Not recommended: Adding an after market "chip" to the engine for increased performance, as in speed. When hauling live weight, I'm not going to haul over a certain speed for safety's sake.
Tip Number Three
Make sure your tires can handle the load. The extra workload means heat will build up, causing a blowout. Check with your local tire shop at the beginning of the season and before a horse camping trip for proper inflation, both for the truck, loaded with a trailer, and the trailer tires also.
Your rig doesn't have to be the newest on the market. Be committed to keeping up on maintenance, and setting things up in your favor!
