Top Five Vegan Store-Bought Cookies

Most natural food stores, and even many stores that are more "traditional", carry vegan cookies of one type or another. Here are a few of my favorites:

Newman O's: One option that you can typically find in any store is the Newman-O. This delicious sandwich cookie comes in the standard flavor (white cream-filled), as well as chocolate, peanut butter chocolate, and hint o' mint. They are all tasty, and have the added benefits of containing ingredients that one can pronounce. Another bonus is that the profits, after taxes, on Newman's Own products are donated to charities.

Alternative Baking Company Cookies: If you're at a health food store specifically, you may also want to check out Alternative Baking Company cookies. (Incidentally, I've also noticed these cookies popping up in various coffee shops, and even in some airport snack shops.) They have many wonderful varieties including chocolate chip and lemon poppy seed, and the company also comes out with some amazing seasonal flavors, such as pumpkin spice. These soft, fluffy, and rather large cookies melt in your mouth. But if you're not extremely hungry, you might want to share this delicious giant with a friend!

Uncle Eddies: We can't discuss vegan cookies without mentioning our friend Uncle Eddie. Uncle Eddie's cookies were my first vegan cookie love, and they maintain a special place in my heart. My favorite flavors are oatmeal chocolate chip and peanut butter chocolate chip. Uncle Eddie and the kids also produce a regular chocolate chip cookie as well as a trail mix variety. The trail mix is a great option if you're in the mood for a nuttier, earthier flavor. All of these babies are rich though, so have a glass of soy milk handy!

Nana's Cookies: While Nana's cookies are also an indulgence, they are made with ingredients you can feel good about. In addition to being vegan, these cookies are made with organic ingredients and are gluten free. They come in regular cookie form, and also in small packages of individually wrapped cookie bars that you can take with you for an on- the- go treat, or send to school with the kids.

Whole Foods Bakery Cookies: If you live in close proximity to a Whole Foods store, chances are good that you will be able to pick up a vegan cookie from their bakery. My local Whole Foods Markets carry tasty vegan chocolate chip and peanut butter cookies. Some also carry a vegan tahini cookie that has a mildly sweet flavor, and a vegan everything cookie that includes cranberries, nuts, and chocolate chips. The everything, if you can find it, is a must-try, although they are all delicious and baked fresh!
