Top 5 Films For Fashion Fans

Without fashion, movies would not be the same, and without movies fashion would not be the same. There are so many great films which have had profound effects on fashion whether it was the bridal chic worn my Maria in 1961 West Side story or the manly attire worn by Diane Keaton in 1977 Annie Hall, so many have affected the fashion world for the better. There is an element of envy on both parts: film looks at fashion and sees a restricted medium which it could focus its creative energies, after all there are many films which people mostly associate with a certain item of clothing or the style (e.g. Keira Knightley in 2007 Atonement). In contrast fashion looks at film as the ultimate catwalk: a way to show their garments in a context and on a famous body while being filmed in high definition and played in front of millions of eager and impressionable viewers.

Coco avant Chanel 2009

Audrey Tatou is one of the only people (apart from maybe Audrey Hepburn) who could play Gabriel 'Coco' Chanel and do justice to this incredible character. Obviously the fashion designer based film had a lot of inspiration for its look and outfits from her but it is the combination of the drama that her life experienced as shown in the film which makes the fashion stand out all the more prominently. Knowing the story behind a fashion designer helps you understand their motivations.

Pulp Fiction 1994

Pulp Fiction is one of those films that will always be hard to top in the cool stakes. Plain suits, gun fire and great dialogue and set pieces, not to mention the music make for a stylish film that sticks in the memory. The look that had the most impact was that of Mia Wallace whose look was no doubt inspired by Anna Karina and inspired many women to rush out and get a dark bob and dark nail varnish.

The Matrix 1999

The Matrix inspired a lot of leather, sunglasses and reinvigorated the styleless mobile phone market back at the turn of the millennium. The characters 'Matrixwear' outfits were uber modernist and lead to a flood of copycat wardrobes springing up around the globe, with even some plus size clothes versions available from ladies plus size shops. The fact that the film was a parable about the energy sucking nature of our consumer driven society was evidently lost on some.

A Single Man 2009

A film, directed, produced and designed by Tom Ford: the man behind the Tom Ford design label; the man who is synonymous with Gucci's reinvigoration and the former creative director of YSL, is surely going to have some nice fashion in it. And of course it did, the film is one of the most stylish ever seen. Colin Firth was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar working amidst some amazing Kennedy era clothing.

Zoolander 2001

Don't make a sequel! This is the quintessential film for seriously good looking people, and on its own is tongue-in-cheek perfection with all its fashion parodies and model mocking splendour. While the clothing is not chic exactly, it does the job of pocking fun at fashion with great effect.
