Many people have heard of "Todos Santos" but don't realize that it can mean two things. "Isla Todos Santos" off of Northern Baja is home to one of the biggest waves in the world and has virtually no accommodation options should one wish to visit. Access is via boat from Ensenada. In addition to risking your life in the surf you can also spend time looking for an endemic bird called the Rufous-crowned Sparrow that inhabits the island.
The other "Todos Santos" is a Baja Sur town that sits on the Pacific coast about a hour and a half drive from either La Paz or Cabo San Lucas. This Pueblo Magico town has long been a haven for ex-pats artists, surfers, and the occasional fugitive on the run from the US government. What makes it special is that it offers staggering views of the Sierra Laguna mountain range while you walk along deserted beaches and watch whales frolic just offshore. The natural wonder of this place has attracted people from all over the world and you'll find great restaurants in and around the town center. You're choice of Baja fish tacos, Mexican, Italian, Sushi, Thai/Asian, and more makes "eating out" an experience that rivals most hip neighborhoods in large cities around the world.
People must be able to step away from the "resort experience" to appreciate Todos Santos and while lots of Cabo vacationers have heard about the town where the Hotel California exists... few actually visit. The myth and legend surrounding the Eagles writing of the song "Hotel California" is murky and many have incorrectly linked the landmark hotel in Todos Santos and the song. Despite the legend the Hotel California is worth a visit.
For those that want to taste the beauty and greatness that Todos Santos has to offer they will have to stay longer than a day trip or afternoon. You'll want towalk the streets, stop in El Tecalote (the bookstore), visit the cultural center, and eat fish tacos from Taco Georges cart. But beyond this you'll want to visit many of the beaches close to town including Los Cerritos, La Cachora, and La Poza and then stay the night so you can catch one of the best sunsets in your life. Time it right and you'll watch the sky come to life with shooting stars and a full moon rise that you'll remember for the rest of your life.
Todos Santos is home to friendly people and if you are traveling with children you'll find lots of friends immediately. The best approach to a two week vacation in Todos Santos is flying into La Paz or Cabo, booking a rental car, and driving into town before dark. The lack of lights on the road and wandering cattle make driving at night something to avoid. You'll want to stay in a Todos Santos vacation rental to really experience the best of Todos Santos. This will allow you to cook meals at home after shopping for fresh and exotic ingredients including fish, fruit, vegetables, and spices. Don't forget to find the Limon con Romaro ice cream at the ice cream shop in town. This treat is only rivaled by hand made Margaritas with fresh squeezed lime and agave syrup. Nightlife is limited here in Todos Santos but for those who do want to find after dinner activities they will be able to do so without much effort.
Winter months in Todos Santos are the busiest times for vacationers to visit the town. The mild and arid climate is a welcome respite from the cold that many visitors normally endure at home. You'll find that the population swells slightly from October to March and things do grind to a halt in the late sweltering days of summer (August - September). So bring your thirst for adventure with you to Todos Santos and you'll find like minded travelers as well as locals that are friendly and welcoming. You'll want to make sure your vacation rental is reserved before leaving as they book up fast in the high season. Enjoy!
