To Lower Your Blood Sugar is Not As Important As to Lower Your Insulin

Expert Author Dr. Terry Trinka

Insulin.

Why do most Americans think that insulin is a drug that you shoot into your blood vessels when you have type 1 diabetes?

Because there is so much money to be made by selling drugs to you to lower your blood sugar.

Thus, all the emphasis in marketing by the drug companies has been to lower your blood sugar.

This is all well and dandy, because to lower your blood sugar is a healthy thing to do, but it ignores the basic mechanism for blood sugar elevations to begin with. Insulin resistance is the mechanism for elevated blood sugar so this is what this article will concentrate on.

First, a little terminology stuff. In your body, insulin is a hormone secreted by your pancreas and resistance is the name given to any hormone whose receptors are not working very well.

Let me explain.

When a hormone is secreted by a hormone gland like the pancreas, the thyroid etc., the hormone gets shuttled around the body by a carrier protein to it's final destination. When it gets there it unhooks from the carrier protein and then hooks up with a part of the cell called the cell membrane. This is a protective but permeable wrapper around each cell in your body. This membrane is really 2 layers thick. Because it has thickness to it, there are substances called receptors embedded in it.

Receptors are like a lock and the hormone is like a key. When a hormone like insulin hooks up with it's receptor, Viola! A channel opens up and the excess glucose in your blood flows into the cell so you can lower your blood sugar.

When too much insulin is hanging around, the receptors for that hormone don't work right, they become sluggish so you can not lower your blood sugar.

Here is the key to this whole process:

Reverse insulin resistance and lower your insulin. Or you will eventually get diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic with all the problems associated with that. Those problems are generally, losing your eyesight, your kidneys and your legs.

Really, type 2 diabetes is just a more exaggerated form of insulin resistance. The mechanisms are the same.

So, to reverse insulin resistance so that you can lower your blood sugar, it is good to pay attention to about 3 things.

Eat good fats and avoid cheap crappy man made ones, while eating a low carb diet.

Exercise moderately with short bursts of max effort for about 20 min per day.

Take some supplements designed to sensitize your insulin receptors.

Now, there is a heck of a lot more I could say about each of these strategies to lower your blood sugar and reverse insulin resistance. In fact, I have said a lot more about these, in many article directories, even in Ezine, which I consider to be one of the best.

If you incorporate the 3 strategies into your lifestyle, then it is only a matter of time before you reverse insulin resistance and lower your blood sugar.

Your body will thank you with less symptoms and a higher level of performance.

To your health,

Dr. Terry
